Tips on Growing Strawberry
Did you know that freshly picked homegrown strawberry fruits are tastier than those you buy in the grocery store? This is because the sugar in the strawberries immediately converts to starch the moment you pick them. Whether you’re still in the planning phase of growing the strawberry fruit or you’ve done it a couple of times before, here are smart and useful tips on growing strawberries at your home garden.
- Strawberries are generally easy to grow. Whether you have wide garden plots or just a few pots on your patio, you can start growing strawberry plants and you’ll be amazed by the fruits they will bear.
- Planting and growing strawberries don’t require any specialized tool or equipment. As long as you have a place for them to grow, such as pots or containers on your deck, patio, or porch, cultivating strawberry fruits is doable right at the comfort of your home.
- There are two ways of growing strawberries. One is by using strawberry seeds and the other is by transplanting an already grown strawberry plant to your home garden.
- Strawberries love sunlight. They require full and direct light from the sun to produce excellent yields. Place your strawberry plant under the sun for about six to eight hours daily.
- If you choose to grow your strawberry plant indoors, be sure to use a full-spectrum grow light. Place it near the plant or hang it above. Expose the plant to the light for eight hours a day, but you can let the light on for up to 16 hours.
- Strawberries grow best in a deep, sandy loam that contains great amounts of organic matter, including peat moss, compost, and some sand.
